If you are local to Washington, DC we invite you to join in-person. Students who commit to attending this program will get an opportunity to network with other college students from across the country, participate in professional development workshops and hear inspirational testimonies from current federal employees who have successful careers in management, data statistics, training, worksite safety inspections, and more.

Please note that due to budget constraints, travel expenses will not be reimbursed.  Space is limited for in-person Job Shadow Day, please register early if you plan to attend.  There is also a virtual option if you are not available to attend in-person. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.  Upon finishing the program, scholars will be awarded a certificate of completion. Additionally, if needed, they will be provided with a short letter confirming their participation in a federally sponsored educational event.

  • The in-person Job Shadow Day is scheduled for Friday, February 2, 2024
  • The virtual Job Shadow Day is set for Monday, February 5, 2024

The in-person day will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET at the Frances Perkins Building in Washington D.C. The virtual day will take place from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. ET via WebEx.

Students that are eligible to participate must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years old on the day of the event and
  • Have an interest in learning about career opportunities in the federal government.

Occupation Description

Employment Trends

The number of jobs in the career for the past two years, the current year, and projections for the next 10 years. Job counts include both employed and self-employed persons, and do not distinguish between full- and part-time jobs. Sources include Emsi industry data, staffing patterns, and OES data.

    Education Levels

    The educational attainment percentage breakdown for a career (e.g. the percentage of people in the career who hold Bachelor’s Degrees vs. Associate Degrees). Educational attainment levels are provided by O*NET.

    Annual Earnings

    Earnings figures are based on OES data from the BLS and include base rate, cost of living allowances, guaranteed pay, hazardous-duty pay, incentive pay (including commissions and bonuses), on-call pay, and tips.

    Technical Skills

    A list of hard skills associated with a given career ordered by the number of unique job postings which ask for those skills.

      Core Competencies

      The skills for the career. The "importance" is how relevant the ability is to the occupation: scale of 1-5. The "level" is the proficiency required by the occupation: scale of 0-100. Results are sorted by importance first, then level.

        Job Titles

        A list of job titles for all unique postings in a given career, sorted by frequency.
