How to prepare for a job fair

Being nervous about attending a job fair can be quite a natural feeling! Thinking back to the first time I attended a job fair, I was feeling a little nervous because I wasn’t sure what to expect. One thing I did feel confident about was how I prepared for it.

In October of 2025, I attended the SUNY Empire Buffalo Job Fair in Cheektowaga, NY. A couple of weeks before the event, I started researching the employers who would be attending. It is advised to talk with as many employers as you can. I just wanted to make sure I didn’t miss any chances to learn more about the positions they’re hiring for and to find out which companies might be the best fit for my career goals.

If you’re planning to attend a job fair, I’ve got some friendly advice to help you succeed.

  • Start by reviewing the list of attending employers. Job fair event organizers share this list in advance, so it’s easy to find.
  • Select the organizations that interest you and research them. Learn about what they do, what kinds of positions they offer, and what skills they value.
  • Prepare to ask at least one question to each of the employers you are interested in. Asking even just one thoughtful question can really show your enthusiasm and initiative, leaving a great impression!
    • Pro Tip: That question shouldn’t be, “What are you hiring for?” because you already did that research. As something like, “I’m very interested in the XXX job opening from your website. What skills and experiences would the ideal candidate possess?
  • Also, before you go, review and update your resume to ensure it’s clear, up to date, and well-organized. Need help with that? Check out SUNY Empire’s BIG Interview/BIG Resume platform! This great platform is available to all students and can help you get your resume and job search ready. I highly recommend taking a moment to check it out!
    • Don’t forget to bring several copies so you’re ready for any opportunity that comes your way. Bring at least one copy for each employer you plan on speaking with, plus a few extra just in case.
  • There’s also another great article on the Career Hub called “Stand Out at Your Next Job Fair: Tips for Success.”

During the job fair, remember:

  • Make eye contact, smile, and stay engaged at the event.
  • Feel free to ask about internships, what it’s like to work at the company, or what qualities they seek in candidates.
  • Don’t forget to jot down quick notes afterward speaking with each employer; it helps keep track of who you spoke with and what you discussed.
  • Follow up after the job fair; it is important! Sending a quick thank-you email within a day or two can make a big difference. Be sure to mention something specific from your chat to help them remember you.

One thing that surprised me was how confident I felt about building connections, practicing professional communication, and exploring new opportunities. It was a rewarding experience that encouraged me to keep moving forward in my career. Remember, if you feel nervous, that’s completely okay. It’s through these moments that you learn and grow by showing your best self. Prepare for the upcoming local job fair and have confidence in yourself. You can do it!
