At Empire State University, workforce development is more than a program, it’s a mission. We define it as training and education programs that equip individuals with the skills and credentials needed for in-demand careers, while connecting them to job opportunities through coordinated partnerships among employers, educators, government, and community organizations.
In short: Workforce development at SUNY Empire is about helping students and employees get the skills they need, when they need them, and building strong pathways to lasting careers.
Our Approach
SUNY Empire’s workforce development strategy is directly aligned with the SUNY Workforce Development and Upward Mobility Strategic Plan, positioning SUNY as New York State’s engine for economic growth. As SUNY’s online institution, we are uniquely positioned to serve adult and nontraditional learners – students who balance work, family, and education – bringing distinct strengths to this workforce development effort.
What Makes Our Approach Different:
- On-ramps and off-ramps for every learner: Students can enter through microcredentials, certificates, pre-apprenticeships, or transfer programs, and seamlessly advance to associate, bachelor’s, or master’s degrees.
- Flexibility and access: With a statewide footprint and robust online learning platform, SUNY Empire delivers options that meet learners where they are – in the workplace, high school, or managing family commitments.
- Experiential learning everywhere: Internships, apprenticeships, employer-sponsored projects, and applied research embedded real-world experience from day one.
- Data-driven and employer-informed: Programs are designed in collaboration with employers and workforce boards, measuring student outcomes and return on investment for industry partners to ensure impact and scalability.
- Systemwide integration: SUNY Empire complements community colleges by offering advanced credentials, long-term career mobility, and smooth transfer pathways.
